Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is the highest level of life support for people who are in cardiac or respiratory failure.At UC San Diego Health, we can initiate ECMO in our hospital and can also provide mobile ECMO to patients at other hospitals.

ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) is a life-support technique that uses a machine to temporarily take over the function of the heart and/or lungs, providing oxygen to the blood and removing carbon dioxide when the patient’s own organs are unable to do so effectively.
