Lesson programs should work on bending, riding one handed, and lateral work, and drill teams, and complex patterns, and biomechanics, and pressure and release, and positive reinforcement…. Jumping isn’t everything. | Rudy Horsemanship

Learning to put a horse on the aids. In the very beginning, we just want riders to learn how to soften the horse laterally, and then release in a way that encourages the seeking response. Eventually, the student learns how to connect more into the outside hand. And eventually they can keep a horse consistently stretching into the hand. But in the beginning, it should look like this! ❤️😍 | Rudy Horsemanship

Rider body awareness exercise. Try this and let me know how it goes. Is it easier to go up on one side and down on the other? Is it harder on one side to go up and down? Which foot is easier to balance on. If you guys like these little quirky body awareness exercises, I can probably come up with a bunch of them | Rudy Horsemanship

When students don’t recognize their progress. This is SUCH a common problem. Learning to ride correctly is a difficult skill and advancing too quickly is downright dangerous. But what really makes it difficult to recognize your progress is that when people first start riding they don’t have a very good eye for what is going on- they don’t know the horse is inverted, counter bending, rushing, rein lame,….. whatever. So as the student improves and their knowledge increases, they start to learn h

The True Professor. So many beginner barns create the idea that horses only do four things… 1.) walk 2.) trot 3.) canter 4.) jump 🤦♀️ I hear instructors lamenting that students just want to jump- well yeah…. That’s because in their barn culture jumping is the pinnacle of riding- it’s all they do… around the rail w,t,c and jump. I wish I would have videoed when Thomas was saying “that’s so cool, that’s so cool” when he first realized he could swing Rave’s haunches so easily with just his seat.

If you want proper posture while riding, it’s important to understand, and practice proper posture during the rest of life. I sure don’t pretend mine is perfect!! But I’m working on it, and improving, and I’m stronger now in my 40s than I ever was in my 30s! | Rudy Horsemanship

Teach your horse to SET their feet down. Don’t just drop them. This guy used to be pretty good at it but it’s been a lot of lesson kids handling his feet and he started to get a little defensive so I did a quick reminder with him this evening. If you can get your horse to set their feet down on the toe and relax it, or said it further forward or backward then they would naturally on their own, and get them to relax and allow you to do leg circles, it really makes a huge difference! This goes so

Riding teachers….. PLEASE TEACH THIS to your beginners from the beginning!!!! Turn on sound. We tell students to look where they are going, and steer with their belly button- which isn’t wrong, BUT when people look left they often slip to the right and vice versa. In the very beginning of this video you will see Gate make a left-hand turn and slip to the right. And quite frankly, if you are an instructor and this doesn’t jump out at you immediately as a problem, then you seriously need to sharp

Left Eye/Right Eye integration and teaching emotional control. At some point I lost so much horsemanship and I’m starting to get it back. A lot of things happened that changed my habits, and not for the better… - I started working stallions so ground tying and bridleless riding became a bit of a liability. - I started working with a lot of beginners and it just doesn’t make sense to be trying to teach nine-year-old kids how to make a horse maintain ground manners at the same time is teaching the

I love writing about riding lateral work and doing fancy stuff, but most instructors spend most of our days doing this stuff- teaching humans the basics so that they can just get along. Teresa made some huge progress in her groundwork slightly after this moment, as she started to understand how we can combine all the ingredients she’s been learning. Please enjoy this little clip as she muddles through simply learning where to stand and how to use her tools. And if this is the stage of learning,

My Lessons students are awesome. I’m just saying! To make this an educational post, nervous hot horses really like repeating patterns! It lets them find a rhythm and know what’s coming in relax into a pattern. Figuring out how long and how complex to make the pattern is a bit of an art form. This double slalom is amazing for this horse to help him relax. It’s also great for the kid because she can focus on how to ride between a dropsical and has the opportunity to fix mistakes since she repe

Danee Rudy explains Andrea Mills (Mills Consilient Horsemanship) 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 I finally understand what she means by counter rotation! And yes, she absolutely encouraged me to do an interpretive dance video so that we can share it all with you If you follow Mills, and you see her horse’s, you know damn well, she has the magic sprinkles!!! Her work is nothing short of magical. She gets a half broken horse, balances its feet, does some in hand work, feeds it a couple cookies, and suddenly it

NOT Like This!!! (Sorry Jami. 😂😂😂😂) When I first start talking to students about being more consciously aware of their hip movement, some tend to try to exaggerate and end up with this side to side movement that I call “the slinky”. This is NOT what we want. At the walk, you want to feel like your hips are walking forwards, with the one advancing SLIGHTLY more than the other! In the trot, you can picture your hips moving in two different ways: 1.) both moving forward and backwards together

VIDEO 1 Lateral poll flexion in hand. My hands are a little busier with Newt than they would be with a more sensitive horse. The idea is to get lateral bend right at the poll joint while keeping the base of the neck relatively straight. Teach your students to do this! It’s so easy and so beneficial. ❤️ | Rudy Horsemanship

The problem with really smart horses is that to get their attention and engage their mind is that you have to do difficult stuff, and new stuff, very regularly. Today was cold and rainy, and her friends were all outside, so this mare was initially distracted enough that I had to come up with something REALLY mentally engaging. I have ground poles set up one canter stride apart. This particular clip was certainly not her best canter, but it was one of her best halts. You can tell she has figured

I do a better job of this one not one handed and talking to the camera, but this weekend I was able to take the time it takes to make sure that my horse puts his head down, respect my space, and has general good ground manners. At home it’s often times hard to spend as much time as it really takes to get things right….. and that sure ain’t the horse’s fault!! | Rudy Horsemanship

USING YOUR SEAT! (I have a 3 part series on this in text posts, but this video demonstrates it a little more.) Turn up volume. Weight aids ARE important, but what we don’t talk about enough is moving diagonally through your hips for lateral movement in particular. | Rudy Horsemanship

I think one of the biggest mistakes I see instructors making is grossly underestimating their students! The second mistake I see instructors doing is treating students like they are just here to ride and like the horse is a piece of gym equipment. 🙄 If you are going to learn how to ride, you have to learn how to train, because if you are within sight and sound of a horse, you are influencing it, and therefore, whether on purpose or not, you are a horse trainer! Beginner students can untrained a

Trust the process. This morning, a student asked me a fabulous question! She’s extra fun to teach because she’s a physical therapist, so she understands biomechanics way better than the average intermediate Rider. She was having trouble keeping her weight in her right stirrup. Her right heel and knee want to scrunch up and it is exacerbated in canter. The horse I had her on, loves to bend, left and fall on his right shoulder- which is also exacerbated in right lead canter. I told her to basical

Train your horse so you can do a job. Do a job to train your horse. And when you’re not sure which one you’re doing- excellent! Make up silly “jobs”…. Go through the gate for no good reason, go check fence lines mounted, see if you can get your horse to put his left hind on the edge of a cone or other marker. Here I’m working with Lumos on a much needed/neglected skill (no, not riding into the wash bay) … ground tying. Being a stallion, I tend to be more cautious. But it’s Sunday and the morning

Want to know how to create a bolter? Always go slow. Yup- the only way to get a horse emotionally stable at speed, is to work at speed. Go gallop. “BuT mY hOrSe gEtS hOt iF We gO fAsT.” Exactly my point… how much do you work on galloping? How much do you need to work on shoulder in to be decent at it? And if you stop working on it once it’s decent, how long until it’s not? A big difference is that you are unlikely to find yourself accidentally shoulder inning out of control! If something gets yo

She tends to over bend the base of neck (especially the second direction) and drop the sternum. I lift and use energy a little towards the center of her sternum to get her to straighten out and rebalance. This is the uglier part of the process. This movement is really pretty once they maintain rhythm and balance, but early on it looks more like this. When the steps are better the inside hind and outside front start to diagonalize. | Rudy Horsemanship

I’m making a point of getting Lise to get some video of me so I can hopefully fix some pervasive issues that constantly creep back into my riding. Placing my hand on my cantle and sitting on my thumb really prevents my “old jumper seat habits die hard” problems, and hold me accountable to riding more one-handed. Oh, this exercise of changing the bend long before changing directions is one of my favorite one-handed exercises. My observations- 1.) I’m constantly taking his neck further to the l

Wooohooo! Yeehaw! Lumos and I doing our first Working Equitation show- speed round!!! We won our dressage and speed, second in Ease of handling, and won champion in Level 2. I love dressage- I do. But nothing has given me the same thrill as the jumper ring until today!!!! This sport is new to me, but it feels like coming home. 🏠 ❤️ (my Lusitano agrees!) Lumos is an 8yo stallion. He covered a mare yesterday 🫣. I started him as a 4 yo, but from 5-7 he was on the back burner and I ‘may’ have ridd
