This large, old, beautiful white oak (Quercus alba) unfortunately has some pretty extensive decay at its base. We used various tools to assess the extent of the internal decay and to determine if the tree has enough strong wood left to support itself for much longer. After collecting our data, we found that there is a large internal hollow that has significantly weakened the tree’s base. Using a well-known equation for strength loss, we determined that a significant portion of the tree’s strengt

This is what a 4-year-old White Oak (Quercus alba) tree looks like! I planted this one in my backyard in the spring of 2021 from an acorn that I collected from a local, wild tree. This year was its best year for growth by far - it grew about 31 inches or 0.75 meters! It’s now about 5’ or 1.5 meters tall! Though I’m a big fan of all native oaks, white oak is my personal favorite tree species. In my area in southeast Pennsylvania, it is perhaps the single most valuable tree species for supporting

This was the first year I tried growing some oaks (Quercus) and hickories (Carya) in an air-pruned raised bed, originally inspired by friend Nick at Living Soil Tree Farm. This is a super efficient way to grow lots of saplings in a small amount of space. You just have to make sure to protect them adequately from squirrels, mice, and chipmunks. This year, I grew swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor), chestnut oak (Q. montana), southern red oak (Q. falcata), and mockernut hickory (Carya tomentosa). Ve

The Swamp White Oak Tree, Quercus bicolor, is a long lived native White Oak that is easier to transplant than other white oaks such as the Bur Oak, Post Oak, and White Oak (Quercus alba). It is native to bottomland sites with acid soil and will become chlorotic with yellowing leaves if the soil has a high lime content. The leaves of the tree have shallow, rounded lobes and are two-toned in color with the top of the leaf being dark shiny green and the underside being white and silvery with a down

Let’s recognize and analyze the different textures of tree bark! ☺️💕🌲 You may also identify trees in the winter by growth patterns, leaf or fruit litter, and use clues from the ecosystem it’s growing in! Tree bark texture is fascinating once you notice the diversity of patterns among the many species of trees. Today let’s touch on few! We have Hophornbeam or Ostrya which consists of about 10 trees in the birch family! Also White Oak or Quercus alba which can easily be confused by their bark bu

Andrew Conboy on Instagram: "While planting an oak from an acorn may not provide the same instant gratification as buying one from a nursery, it has been fulfilling and enjoyable to watch this seedling grow for the last two years. I collected the acorns in the fall of 2021 from a wild white oak (Quercus alba) tree at a local nature preserve. Growing and planting native plants from local wild seed is a good way to preserve local genetic diversity. These local ecotype plants should theoretically b

Andrew Conboy on Instagram: "Have you ever noticed a smooth patch of bark on a white oak (Quercus alba) or post oak (Q. stellata)? If so, the tree may have been infected with Smooth Patch Disease (Aleurodiscus oakesii), a fungal disease that causes the mature, outermost bark to degrade off. Luckily, the disease is mostly harmless and has no direct health consequences. It decreases bark thickness, which can indirectly lower the tree’s ability to protect itself from mechanical injury. The fungus f
