Pinch your dahlias… All dahlias grow at different rates and if you planted your tubers in May they might be ready for pinching! Pinching basically gives you double the stems and double the flowers! You only need to pinch each stem ONCE! And from each tuber you ideally only want 3-5 main stems coming from each tuber. Any more than that and I remove them! HOW TO pinch your dahlias and why? On our farm when our dahlia plants are around 30cms in height we “pinch” them. Pinching means removing the central growing tip to encourage lateral growth on your plants. Doing this results in more stems which means more flowers! Woo hoo! Your stems will also be longer and much thinner which is perfect for floristry too.
