The Texas law would allow parents to request the deletion of social media accounts for those under 18. Texas may soon pass into law one of the most restrictive set of social media rules for minors, including making it illegal for those under 18 to be on social media.

HB 186 will prohibit minors under the age of 18 from creating accounts on social media sites such as Twitter, TikTok, Facebook and Snapchat. It will also require users to verify their ages. If a minor already has a social media account, parents can request that the company delete that account, and the company must comply within 10 days.

The Texas Senate is poised to vote on a bill that proposes a strict social media ban for all residents under the age of 18, citing concerns about mental health and online safety for youth.
