Before the Davos crowd, President Trump signaled a shift in tone, calling for an end to the war in Ukraine and placing the onus on Russia to come to the table.

DAVOS, Switzerland — United States President Donald Trump on Thursday directly blamed Vladimir Putin for the ongoing war in Ukraine, a day after threatening massive tariffs and sanctions on Russian products if he fails to make a deal to end the conflict.

One of President Donald Trump’s several broken campaign promises was highlighted by a question Thursday as he spoke at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he refused to say if Russia’s illegal war against Ukraine would be over in a year.

Donald Trump campaigned heavily on the promise that he would end the war, by claiming the Russian invasion of Ukraine would've never happened if he was still president, and that he could end the war in a day.

President Trump told the World Economic Forum that he wants to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin soon in order to discuss a possible peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine. Why it matters: Ending the war is one of Trump's primary foreign policy objectives.

"I really would like to be able to meet with President Putin soon to get that war ended," Trump told the World Economic Forum in Davos.
