Mortgage rates edged slightly lower, Freddie Mac data released May 1 shows. But what’s in store for home buyers in the next month — and year?

Mortgage rates are down today and still under 7%. Today’s national average on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage is 6.79%, according to Bankrate. If you choose a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage, the average rate is 5.

Borrowing costs on 15-year fixed-rate mortgages, popular with homeowners refinancing their home loans, also fell. The average rate dropped to 5.92% from 5.94% last week. It’s down from 6.47% a year ago, Freddie Mac said.
