Damir Ortiz, a 10-year-old with leukemia and a rare genetic disease that has caused a tumor in his left eye, was medevaced Wednesday from Cuba to the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami, after overcoming bureaucratic obstacles and the reluctance of the Cuban government.

Cuba has yet to discuss migration with the Trump administration, Vice Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio told Reuters, even as the U.S. plows ahead with a vast immigration crackdown that could leave many Cubans at risk of deportation.

Cuba could be added to the "red list" of countries facing a total travel ban, according to CBS Miami news partner The Miami Herald which also reported that Haiti would be put on a less restrictive list.

When asked about the travel ban, a State Department spokesperson said the agency “does not comment on internal deliberations or communications.”
