“The Pittsburgh Pirates are acquiring right-hander Chase Shugart in a trade with the Boston Red Sox for right-hander Matt McShane, according to sources familiar with the deal. Shugart was recently designated for assignment by the Red Sox,” Murray wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

The Red Sox and Pirates have been frequent trade partners in the last year. Last July, the Sox sent infielder Nick Yorke to Pittsburgh in exchange for starting pitcher Quinn Priester. More recently, the Sox sent infielder Enmanuel Valdez to the Pirates in December and obtained reliever Joe Vogatsky.

The Boston Red Sox have three top prospects who are nearing their MLB debuts and could push for roster spots on Opening Day during this year's Spring Training. That trio of outfielder Roman Anthony, shortstop Marcelo Mayer and infielder/outfielder Kristian Campbell all finished their 2024 seasons at Triple-A Worcester with Mayer yet to play a game at that level due to a back injury.
