The bill cleared a key hurdle early this morning after the president and House Speaker Mike Johnson persuaded a group of Republican holdouts to change their votes.

The House floor was in suspended animation all afternoon and evening and then again through midnight as GOP leaders held votes open. For a while, there were five Republicans voting against a procedural motion—enough to block the bill—and Trump was posting on social media to urge them to get in line. They relented after 3 a.m.

Just two Republican members of the House voted against President Trump’s massive tax and spending bill that was received final congressional approval on Thursday afternoon. Massie was among the first Republicans to oppose the bill and spent the week speaking out against it.
