In one of its last major actions on climate, the Biden administration Wednesday finalized a key waiver allowing California to set its own vehicle pollution controls – effectively allowing the nation’s most populous state to implement its 2035 ban on selling new gasoline cars.

The Environmental Protection Agency has granted two requests from California to enforce strict standards for vehicle emissions, including a rule aimed at banning sales of new gasoline-powered cars in the state by 2035.

The state says the rule is crucial to meeting greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and cutting smog-forming pollutants.
