Crews are salting the roads as the Rochester region braces for a major winter storm that's already hit parts of the country.
NEW YORK (PIX11) — Snow will pick up throughout the day in New York and New Jersey, and cold temperatures will create icy roads. New York City is under a travel advisory on Sunday as the city prepares for temperatures under 35 degrees with up to five inches of snow accumulation.
The NYS Thruway Authority has put a travel ban in place for Long Combination Tandem vehicles on Sunday, banning their travel on all NYS Thruway routes.
The Memorial Art Gallery will be closing at 3:30 p.m. Sunday due to the winter weather advisory. The museum’s regular hours are 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Wednesday – Sunday. The MAG is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Visit the MAG website here for more information.

Several WNY travel advisories in effect
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A winter storm warning has been issued for all of Western New York with the exception of Allegany County until Wednesday at 4 p.m. due to heavy lake effect snow and strong winds.
More widespread snow is expected today across Western New York, along with some of the coldest temperatures of the year, and that has led the National Weather Service in Buffalo to issue a Winter Weather Advisory for all of Western New York. The advisory will start at Noon today and last until 7 am on Thursday morning.
