Belichick has spent the past season out of coaching for the first time since 1974, the year before he began his career as a special assistant with the Baltimore Colts. Over the past several months, his name has been tied to various potential openings in the NFL, but none in college.

Bill Belichick has been hired as the next coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels, the school announced Wednesday. The six-time Super Bowl champion, who has never coached at the collegiate level in any capacity,

College football coaching searches don’t operate like most normal hiring processes, because college athletics isn’t a normal industry. The athletic director typically makes the hiring decision, but a school board must often approve the contract. And before the hire is made, anyone from donors to other school officials may push for someone else.
