KYIV, Ukraine—Russia launched a massive drone and missile barrage targeting energy infrastructure in Ukraine on Friday, causing blackouts in the capital and killing at least one civilian. The strikes portend a tough winter ahead for Ukraine, as Russia aims to make life harder for Ukrainians and sap their morale.

Russian drone and missile strikes wounded at least 20 people in Kyiv, damaged residential buildings and caused blackouts across swathes of Ukraine early Friday, authorities said. A child was also killed in separate attacks in the southeast of the country.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said a child had died in Zaporizhzhia and more than 20 people were injured across Ukraine after Russia launched a large-scale attack overnight into Friday.
