The James Beard Awards are being handed out in Chicago Monday night to the best restaurants and chefs from around the country.Five local chefs and restaurants are nominated, including Galit in Lincoln Park for Outstanding restaurant and Kumiko in the West Loop for Outstanding Bar.

An East Nashville favorite has earned top recognition from the James Beard Foundation, one of the highest honors in American cuisine. Peninsula’s Jake Howell claimed the prestigious James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southeast.

New York City restaurants won three of the six major national awards: outstanding chef (Jungsik Yim of Jungsik ), outstanding hospitality ( Atomix) and outstanding restaurateur (Lee Hanson and Riad Nasr of Frenchette, Le Rock and Le Veau d’Or ).
