Israeli officials have been pushing the United States to join the fray and use its huge bunker-busting bomb to crush Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

The Israeli Air Force struck a command center in Tehran, killing Ali Shadmany, Iran’s chief of war general staff, who had authority over the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Iranian military.

Mohammad-Reza Zafarghandi said in an update that an Israeli strike on Sunday on Quds Square in northern Tehran injured 59 civilians and killed 12 people, including a pregnant woman. That attack also ruptured a main water pipeline.

Israel and Iran launched a new round of attacks as the conflict between the two heavily armed rivals enters its fifth day.

Whether the U.S. gets more involved than it already is, some members of Congress from both parties argue, should not be up to the President.

Iran is often portrayed as one of the world’s most dangerous actors, but with its attacks on Iranian defenses, nuclear sites and proxy militias, Israel has exposed a compromised and weakened adversary.

The Israel-Iran conflict has escalated into its fourth day with mounting casualties, widening attacks, and no sign of diplomatic resolution.

When Israel launched its series of strikes against Iran last week, it also issued a number of dire warnings about the country’s nuclear program, suggesting Iran was fast approaching a point of no return in its quest to obtain nuclear weapons and that the strikes were necessary to preempt that outcome.
